Colin Chapman The Biography
Colin Chapman the Biography is the official and definitive record of a leading entrepreneur and engineer of the post-War generation. Authoritative text and outstanding images capture the extraordinary lives and achievements realized by Colin and Hazel Chapman, the co-founders of the Lotus marque.
William Taylor of Coterie Press is renowned for his expertise as author, photographer and publisher of many leading books about Lotus history and Colin Chapman the Biography is the product of his collaboration with son Clive Chapman and Classic Team Lotus, published in the 75th year of the marque.
The book which consists of two 264-page volumes in a hard slipcase, draws upon three principle sources; the biographical record written by Gerard ‘Jabby’ Crombac, the auto biography of Fred Bushell and a multitude of assorted period texts. In combination with more than 400 images – many from the personal family albums maintained by Hazel Chapman – the text captures the extraordinary story of Chapman’s many accomplishments and provides a fascinating insight into the man.
Colin Chapman’s contribution to motorsport was immense, leading the way for Great Britain to become established as the dominant force, which is still the case today. The automotive industry recognized Chapman as a pioneering innovator who frequently overturned conventional thinking in terms of production road car design, manufacture and marketing.
The foreword to the original Crombac text was written in 1986 by Enzo Ferrari – recognized by Chapman as his greatest competitor – who observed Chapman as being ‘so talented because of his ability to produce ideas ahead of his time’.
